Fire Ant Control

Fire Ant Control in St. Petersburg

Property-Specific Fire Ant Control Starts with Accurate Identification

Effective control starts with identifying the type of ant and locating the colonies affecting your property. Geiger's Pest Services has provided ant control in St. Petersburg since 2000, using thorough inspections and property-specific plans to address activity around homes.

Gary Geiger founded our veteran-owned, family-operated business to serve local property owners. Our team brings more than 100 years of combined pest control experience to each job. We’re fully licensed and insured, and we operate under the direction of a certified pest control operator.

Signs of Fire Ant Activity Around St. Petersburg Homes

The red imported fire ant, or Solenopsis invicta, is the most notorious of Florida’s two fire ant species. Workers range from reddish-brown to black and measure approximately 1/8 to 1/4 inch long. They construct soil mounds that are seldom more than 18 inches in diameter.

In St. Petersburg’s sandy soil, mounds can be smaller and less noticeable than those formed in clay-based soil. A mound in the lawn or near the foundation is an important warning sign, but the absence of a large mound doesn’t rule out a colony.

Common nesting areas include:

  • Lawns and landscaped areas
  • Spaces beneath patio slabs
  • Edges of sidewalks and concrete driveways
  • Areas beside foundations
  • Soil around electrical boxes

Heavy summer thunderstorms can also change ant behavior. Both fire and ghost ants may move toward higher, drier ground and enter homes after substantial rain. On warm, sunny days following rain, red imported ant colonies can produce midday mating flights that establish new colonies.

Fire Ant Sting Risks

Workers respond aggressively when a nest is disturbed, and several can sting in quick succession. A sting causes pain and typically develops into a white pustule about a day later. Although uncommon, severe allergic reactions can include anaphylactic shock.

Accurate identification guides the management plan. Before recommending service, we determine whether the activity comes from a fire ant colony or another type of ant.

Fire Ant Colony Reduction, Not Surface Treatment

Our goal is colony reduction rather than treating only the workers visible above ground. A colony can recover or recolonize when the queen isn’t eliminated, so scattering products over visible ants alone may not resolve the infestation.

Professional management generally involves individual mound treatments, area-wide broadcast bait applications, or a combination selected according to the property and infestation pattern. Individual mound treatments may include liquid drenches, dusts, or mound injection methods. The appropriate approach depends on the inspection findings.

We create a targeted plan based on the number and location of visible mounds, potential nesting sites, routes around the structure, and conditions that support colony movement.

Why Common Fire Ant Remedies Fall Short

Club soda, grits, soap, wood ashes, and shoveling mounds together aren’t effective ways to control an infestation. Disturbing a mound can cause workers to relocate without eliminating the queen. A colony-focused strategy addresses more than the ants visible on the surface.

What to Expect from a Fire Ant Inspection

We offer free estimates for residential ant removal in St. Petersburg. Before work begins, a technician inspects the property for visible mounds, nesting areas, entry points, and the type of ant involved. The inspection also considers how the ants may be moving around the structure.

Once we understand the activity, we develop a property-specific treatment plan. Your technician reviews that plan with you and explains how the ants may be entering or moving across the property. You’ll know what we found and how the proposed treatment works before service begins.

We also account for how your household uses outdoor areas. Our technicians ask about dogs, cats, and other pets before treatment, then place treatments where animals can’t easily reach them.

Quarterly Fire Ant Protection in St. Petersburg

New colonies can develop after the initial problem has been addressed, particularly when storms and mating flights support colony movement. Ongoing management identifies new activity and addresses recolonization before several mounds become established.

We offer quarterly pest control service plans for homeowners who want ongoing protection. We call the day before each scheduled visit to confirm the appointment. Customers don’t need to be home when the scheduled work is limited to exterior treatment.

If ants return between regular visits, we return to treat the property at no extra cost. This policy provides continued management while outdoor ant activity can still recur.
