No-See-Um Control in St. Petersburg
Find the Source of Persistent Outdoor Bites
Persistent bites from insects too small to identify call for a careful property assessment, not assumptions based on mosquito activity alone. Geiger's Pest Services helps residential and commercial property owners investigate biting-insect concerns and identify conditions contributing to activity around their properties.
Founded in 2000, we’re a veteran-owned and family-operated company serving St. Petersburg. Our team brings over 100 years of combined pest-control experience to property-specific inspections and planning.

Why Biting Midges Thrive in St. Petersburg
No-see-ums are biting midges, tiny flies in the genus Culicoides that are also called sand flies or sand gnats. Females take a blood meal to produce eggs, while males feed on plant nectar and don’t bite people. Their small size can make the source of repeated bites difficult to see.
These pests are especially abundant and persistent in coastal areas. Weedon Island Preserve contains mangrove forests and tidal wetlands, illustrating the moist coastal habitat associated with biting-midge breeding. Properties near coastal wetlands or other damp organic areas may experience noticeable activity under favorable conditions.
Biting midges and mosquitoes breed in different habitats and behave differently in flight. A standard mosquito barrier spray may have minimal effect on biting-midge populations, so mosquito control isn’t automatically the answer to every outdoor biting problem. Correct identification and an evaluation of site conditions should come before selecting an approach.
Our Biting-Insect Assessment Process
We begin by asking what you’re seeing, where bites occur, and when activity is most noticeable. Those observations help our technicians focus the inspection without presuming which insect is responsible.
Our onsite insect-control inspections cover interior rooms, exterior walls, landscaping, and key problem areas. We document our findings and use them to develop a custom treatment plan for the property.
An assessment may include attention to:
- Areas where occupants or customers report the most biting activity
- Exterior walls and nearby landscaping that may provide resting conditions
- Birdbaths, clogged gutters, low lawn areas, and containers that collect rainwater
- Drainage or landscape conditions that may contribute to insect activity
Our technicians explain how insects may be entering or gathering around the property and how the recommended treatment works. This assessment identifies the conditions and locations that need attention before we recommend an insect-control approach.
Reducing Biting-Midge Exposure Around Your Property
Property-level changes can reduce exposure, though they may not eliminate the underlying population. Fine-mesh biting-midge screen has openings small enough to exclude these insects, while standard window and door screens typically don’t. Inspecting screened spaces for gaps and choosing screening designed for tiny insects can create a more effective physical barrier.
Biting midges are weak fliers, so moving air from outdoor fans or natural breezes can deter them in occupied areas. Fans may be useful around patios, porches, and other gathering spaces where biting is concentrated. Place them to direct steady airflow across the area people use.
Why One Spray May Not Resolve Persistent Activity
Adult biting-midge insecticide sprays generally provide temporary population control because new flies continue to emerge. Persistent outdoor biting concerns require attention to breeding and resting conditions rather than reliance on one spray application.
When property conditions contribute to pest activity, we may recommend landscaping and drainage changes alongside insect treatment. Addressing clogged gutters, low areas, and other moisture-holding locations can be part of a broader plan, depending on what the inspection reveals.
