St. Petersburg Formosan Termite Control
Professional Treatment for the Most Destructive Termite Species in Florida
When you find mud tubes along your foundation or hollow wood that shouldn’t be hollow, the most important question is which species you’re dealing with. Formosan subterranean termites are invasive, established in Florida, and operate on a scale that sets them apart from every other termite you’d encounter here.
At Geiger's Pest Services, our team has been working in St. Petersburg since 2000, and when a Formosan termite call comes in, we approach it differently than a general subterranean termite job because the damage timeline doesn’t allow for delay.
A Formosan colony can number in the millions. The central nest sits underground, but satellite nests are established close to where the workers are actively feeding, which means the activity you can see is rarely the full extent of the infestation. The population size and foraging range are what make this species the most structurally destructive termite in North America.
If you’ve found evidence of subterranean termite activity, contact us at (727) 761-9385 to schedule a Formosan termite assessment in St. Petersburg. Our technicians explain what we find before recommending any treatment.
How Formosan Termites Differ from Native Species
Native subterranean termite species are a serious problem in Florida. Formosan subterranean termites are a different order of problem. The difference comes down to colony structure and scale. A Formosan colony builds satellite nests above the central underground nest, positioning workers close to active food sources inside your home’s structure. Damage spreads in multiple directions simultaneously from different entry points, which is why our inspection for suspected Formosan activity covers more of a structure than a standard termite check.
In older neighborhoods like St. Petersburg’s Historic Uptown or Kenwood, where housing stock predates current wood treatment standards, an established Formosan colony has a different repair picture than the same colony in a newer build. The combination of aged lumber and Florida’s year-round humidity gives an active colony consistent conditions to work in.
What Formosan Termites Look Like and Where They Hide
Formosan termite workers are small, wingless, and white to cream, measuring three to four millimeters. That description fits most subterranean species, which is why worker sightings alone don’t confirm the species.
Soldiers are more distinctive: four to five millimeters in length, with a white body and a brownish-orange, teardrop-shaped head capsule. If you open a section of damaged wood and find insects with that head shape, that’s a reliable identification of an active Formosan infestation. Mud tubes are the other primary indicator. Formosan termites build them to move from soil to food source without exposure to air. We look for tubes along foundation walls, pier bases, and any point where wood contacts or comes close to soil.
The signs of an active Formosan termite infestation are recognizable if you know what to look for:
- Mud tubes – Pencil-width tunnels of soil and debris along foundation walls or piers. These are how workers move from the soil to a food source without exposure to open air.
- Hollow-sounding wood – Framing, floor joists, or door frames that sound papery when tapped. Formosan termites feed from the inside out, so the surface often looks intact.
- Discarded wings – Small wings along window sills or baseboards after a swarm. Swarms typically occur in the evening in late spring and early summer in this part of Florida.
- Visible soldiers – Insects with a brownish-orange, teardrop-shaped head inside damaged wood indicate an active infestation.
Note that confirming live activity requires finding live termites. Old tubes and old damage tell us where the colony was, not whether it’s still present.
The 6-to-24-Month Damage Window
The 6- to 24-month range for structural damage is not a worst-case projection. It’s the observed range for a Formosan colony in a wood-frame home under active Florida conditions. A smaller or newer colony is toward the longer end of that window. A large, established colony with multiple satellite nests already inside the structure can cause damage that requires major repairs within months.
That timeline changes the urgency of the inspection conversation. If you’re seeing signs of Formosan activity, the right response is to schedule a professional assessment, not wait to see whether the problem gets worse.
How We Treat Formosan Termite Infestations
Every job starts with the inspection. Before any treatment plan is in place, we walk the full structure, interior and exterior, identify where the activity is, and explain our findings in plain terms. We don’t recommend a treatment until you understand what we saw.
For active Formosan termite infestations, a non-repellent liquid termiticide is the primary treatment. Non-repellent formulations are critical for this species because workers transfer activity through treated zones rather than avoiding them, thereby reaching the colony level.
We apply termiticide through trenching and soil treatment around the structure’s perimeter and through drilling and injection into the slab or foundation where the activity requires it. Liquid and foam termiticide are also injected into cracks, wall voids, and crevices where the colony has established satellite nests.
Bait stations are incorporated into the treatment plan as a remedial measure where appropriate.
Our technicians don’t subcontract. The team that conducts the inspection is the same team that performs the treatment.
Preventive Treatment and Long-Term Protection
For properties in areas with high Formosan termite pressure, regular inspections and preventive treatments are key to catching infestations before they’re established. A colony doesn’t signal its presence until it’s already inside your structure. Our quarterly maintenance plans include termite monitoring and assessment of conditions that increase risk, including soil-to-wood contact and moisture intrusion points.
Our team brings over 100 years of combined experience with Florida’s specific pest conditions, and Formosan subterranean termites are included in every residential inspection we perform. If you’ve recently purchased a home in the St. Petersburg area and don’t have a current termite inspection on record, that’s where to start.
A Formosan termite colony that’s been in your home’s framing for a year has a different repair picture than one caught early. Call (727) 761-9385 or contact Geiger's Pest Services online to schedule an inspection and get a clear picture of where things stand.
Frequently Asked Questions About Formosan Termite Control
If you’ve found signs of termite activity or aren’t sure what species you’re dealing with, the following are the questions we hear most often before a first inspection.
How Do I Tell If I Have Formosan Termites Instead of a Native Species?
The soldiers are the most reliable means of identification. Formosan termite soldiers have a brownish-orange, teardrop-shaped head capsule that’s visually distinct from native subterranean species. If you’re finding mud tubes, hollow wood, or discarded wings but aren’t certain of the species, schedule an inspection. We identify the species during the initial assessment.
Can Store-Bought Termite Products Handle a Formosan Infestation?
Over-the-counter products don’t reach a subterranean colony and don’t transfer through a large Formosan population. They address only the termites they directly contact. An active Formosan infestation requires professional treatment with a non-repellent termiticide applied to the soil and structure, where it is carried through the colony at the source.
How Long Does Formosan Termite Treatment Take?
That depends on the size of the structure and how far the activity has spread. A thorough subterranean termite job on a residential home takes close to three hours when it’s done properly. Our technicians cover the full perimeter, treat every identified zone, and confirm the work is complete before they leave.
What Areas Do You Cover for Termite Control?
We provide termite control to residential and commercial customers throughout St. Petersburg and the surrounding areas, including Pinellas, Hillsborough, and Manatee counties.
Do Formosan Termites Come Back After Treatment?
A properly treated infestation is addressed at the colony level, not just at the surface. A treated property in an area with ongoing Formosan termite pressure can attract new colonies over time, which is why regular inspection and maintenance are part of how we approach termite risk management. Several of our services are backed by a satisfaction guarantee. If follow-up treatment is needed, we come back.
