My Neighbor Just Fumigated, are Pests Going to Come to My House?

Coming home and seeing fumigations trucks in front of your neighbor's house can be understandably worrying. Aside from the health concerns relating to the pesticides, many believe that if a house is fumigated, whatever pests were in your neighbor's house will migrate over to yours. Fortunately, this is highly unlikely. Here is some information on the fumigation process, and why, if you see fumigation tents over your neighbor's homes, you have little to worry about. Summary of a Typical Fumigation Fumigation is when a house or building is filled with gaseous pesticides, killing all bed bugs, rodents, termites, and any other pests which may be living inside. Almost always, fumigators will cover the structure with a large tent to prevent the toxic chemicals from seeping out and causing harm to the environment and other people. The tent also serves to keep the pesticides concentrated within the house so they can...

When It's Time to Fumigate Your Home

Fumigation is a significant undertaking in pest control, and most of the time your pest control needs can be resolved in other ways by using other means. A full structural fumigation requires specific conditions to present, and any fumigation should only be performed with a licensed exterminator on hand to monitor safety conditions. The primary drawback to fumigation is that it requires completely evacuating the building and applying copious amounts of highly toxic chemicals. You can make an informed decision about the need to fumigate your home due to the verified presence of the following pest species: Drywood Termites Most of the structural fumigations performed in the United States today are implemented to get rid of drywood termites. These hardy pests work their way deep into the walls, floors, and ceilings of homes and businesses, and they can live for years on almost any organic material. Upholstery fabric, drywall, wall...

Don’t Get Confused—Bed Bug Lookalikes

The insect world is diverse. The Smithsonian Institution’s Department of Entomology estimates that in the United States, about 91,000 species of insects have been named and described, with another 73,000 yet to be explored. For beetles alone, 23,700 species have been fully identified. Meanwhile, by broad definition, insects are “a group of small and often winged animals that are arthropods having six jointed legs and a body formed of a head, thorax, and abdomen.” It’s little wonder that the average person can find their heart racing as they struggle with the decision: Is it a bed bug, or is it something else? Bed Bug Lookalikes A number of other common insect pests may at first resemble a bed bug and even cause similar bites, itches or rashes. However, closer visual inspection can help in identifying some distinguishing characteristics. Ticks: Ticks are not insects but a type of parasitic spider—an arachnid....

What is the Difference Between Rotten Wood and Termite Damage?

Termite damage and dry rot can appear very similar to the untrained eye. For example, chipped or peeling paint that may appear to the be the result of water or weather damage may be hiding extensive termite damage underneath, and the crumbling post on your front porch that looks as if it is being eaten away may actually be dry rot. What Is Dry Rot? Dry rot occurs when fungi attack seasoned lumber and eat away at the cellulose that gives the wood its strength. The result is a piece of wood that feels soft and spongy and easily crumbles into a powder. Since the fungi that cause dry rot are activated by moisture, the condition is almost always seen outdoors. The damage starts at the surface and gradually makes its way all the way through the wood. The damaged wood may be gray, brown, or black in color and...

Common Myths About Bed Bugs

bedbug card
Bed bugs are small pests that tend to get inside the crevices of your mattress and box springs. They can also get into the crevices of the cushions on your furniture, such as chairs and couches. You've probably heard things about bed bugs that might seem like they would be true, but they are often a myth that has been created to frighten people about the bug.  One myth is that you can't see bed bugs. While they are small and can be difficult to see, you can detect their presence by closely looking at white areas of your mattress and box springs and in the crevices of your bed. The bugs look like black or brown specs. You usually won't be able to see the eggs or the baby bed bugs, but the adults are usually fairly easy to detect.  Many people think that bed bugs live in places...

What Does Fumigation Entail?

Sometimes a pest infestation gets extremely out of control. When it reaches serious levels, pest control professionals may suggest fumigation as a solution to kill the insects. Some pests, such as termites and roaches, multiply by the thousands and spread throughout an interior. Fumigation works to reach the pests deep inside your home, killing them before they can do further harm.  How Fumigation Works Prepare the home. Because fumigation affects the entire interior space, it's important to remove everyone from the property, including every pet, plant and food item. All the drawers and cabinet doors should be open, and all the exit doors and windows should be closed. The fumigator will post warning signs and take care of sealing the home and preventing the gas from seeping through to the outside. Fumigate the interior.  With the prep work completed, the fumigator will pump the gas into your home. This process...

Bed Bugs and Dirty Laundry

Bed bugs may be even more clever than what researchers previously thought. According to a University of Sheffield study, when the pests are unable to locate a human host, they search for things that smell like people. In particular, the pests seek out dirty clothes.  Details of the Study  When researchers tested bed bugs, they found that the pests were considerably more attracted to dirty clothes than clean ones. To test bed bugs, researchers placed the insects in a space that was the size of a traditional bedroom with clothing items that were clean and dirty. For the study, the research team also increased the space’s Co2 level to one that mimicked human occupancy. They did this to encourage the instinctual search behavior in bed bugs instead of direct it. Following the study, the bed bug researchers were able to determine that when you’re traveling and you leave clothes that...

termite card
According to the most recent statistics compiled by pest control professionals, termites are responsible for nearly $30 billion in damage annually to man-made structures and crops in the United States. And the Southeast continues to be the region most vulnerable to infestation. To ensure your property doesn't fall victim to these destructive pests, every homeowner must remain mindful of the following five warning signs and contact pest control if you suspect infestation. The Presence of Flying Termites The first sign of a termite infestation is the presence of flying termites, which are either called swarmers or alates. Flying termites are males and females that have vacated the nest in search of a mate in hopes of establishing a new colony. Subterranean termites will usually swarm at night or after rain, and they're attracted to light sources.  With flying termites also come discarded wings, which occurs after they have found a...
